Last high school football season in the Coachella Valley, passing offenses were a huge storyline. Quarterbacks and receivers all over the valley set school single-season records, and Aiden Pope from Yucca Valley High School was among them.
Pope set new school records for single-season receptions (68), receiving yards (1,178) and receiving touchdowns (15). He also ran for 310 yards and four touchdowns, returned a punt and a kickoff for scores and intercepted four passes on defense.
Because he is the top two-way star in the region returning, he checks in at No. 1 on The Desert Sun's annual Elite 11 countdown highlighting the area's top players entering the 2026 season. Though Pope is not the first Trojan to make the list in recent years, he is the first Yucca
Valley player to claim the top spot.

He follows Ben Simonds (2013) and Benji Cordova (2016) of La Quinta, Orlando Wallace of Cathedral City (2014), Franklin Miller (2015), Arieon Capler (2020) and Koa Rapolla (2025) of Palm Springs, Marques Prior (2017) of Rancho Mirage, Zach Avina of Palm Desert (2021), Fabrice Voyne (2018) and Ryder Ruiz (2022) of Xavier Prep, Jake Shipley (2019) of Shadow Hills and Aaron Ramirez (2023-24) of Coachella Valley as a player in the top spot since we started the series.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound senior's signature performance came in a win over Banning, when he caught 13 passes for a school-record 305 yards and four touchdowns, while running for 132 yards and an additional two touchdowns.
This season, Pope will play all over the field. He'll play on the outside, in the slot, out of the backfield, as a returner and in the defensive backfield at free safety. With that much time on the field, his production could be absurd.
Coaches say that Pope will have even more talent around him this season, which means it'll be even more difficult for teams to organize an entire defensive game plan around stopping him. That should be a scary thought for opposing teams.
