Chuck Russell, the filmmaker behind hits including theJim Carrey blockbuster "The Mask" and horror films "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" and "The Blob," died July 22 at his home in the San Diego area. He was 74. His wife confirmed his death and said the cause was unknown.
Russell spent decades working in Hollywood, making genre films, many of them horror films, of the 1980s and 1990s.
In a 2024 interview with Deadline, he reflected on why horror continued to resonate with audiences.
"Inside all of us there's an Everyman who can face the greatest darkness," he said. "That's the fun of horror: We have the catharsis of seeing what it would be like to face our greatest fears."
In a statement released to the media, Carrey said it was an
honor to work with Russell, whose direction on "The Mask" — one of the breakout hits that helped propel Carrey to movie stardom — created a playful, welcoming atmosphere that inspired the cast and crew.
"I consider 'The Mask' one of the jewels of my creative life," Carrey said. "Thank you, Chuck.”

A Hollywood career built on spectacle and special effects
Russell arrived in Hollywood shortly after graduating from college, taking entry-level jobs while trying to break into the film business. He worked in a series of behind‑the‑scenes roles, including producing, before getting his first opportunity behind the camera.
That chance came with 1987's "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors," the third installment in the Freddy Krueger franchise. Russell co-wrote and directed the film, helping establish Russell as a filmmaker with a flair for blending fantasy, horror and spectacle.

Russell followed "Dream Warriors" with "The Blob" in 1988, a remake of the cult horror classic with Steve McQueen.
His greatest commercial success arrived six years later with "The Mask," the 1994 comedy that transformed Jim Carrey from rising star to household name and introduced Cameron Diaz to movie audiences.
Using groundbreaking visual effects from Industrial Light & Magic, Russell brought the comic-book-inspired character to life with cartoon-style transformations that pushed the limits of special-effects filmmaking. The movie became a global hit, earning more than $350 million worldwide
He later directed films including "Eraser," the 1996 action thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 2002, his special effects extravaganza "The Scorpion King" was Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's first starring film role.
Russell is survived by his wife, Ania, his sister, Anne Jacob, and his three children from his first marriage: Logan, Riley and Carlyn Russell.
