A new gated community is on the way in the south end of Cathedral City.
The Broadway Cove neighborhood by Shea Homes has begun construction near Bankside Drive, bringing around 101 single-family homes to the city.
The project was first approved by the planning commission in 2023, under the name Nirvana Estates. It has since gone through several changes and a rebranding, but work has finally gotten started.

"Set against the sun-soaked backdrop of Cathedral City, Broadway Cove offers a rare opportunity to buy a new home in the Coachella Valley," Shea Homes said in marketing material on its website. "The community reflects the spirit of the surrounding desert, with stylish, thoughtfully designed layouts that invite indoor-outdoor living and connection
to the breathtaking surroundings nearby."
The homes will comprise a mix of mid-century modern and contemporary styles, suitable to the desert, the website stated. Floor plans will range from 1,946 to 2,257 square feet. Homes are expected to include three to four bedrooms and three bathrooms, along with a two-car garage, with prices starting at $800,000.
An onsite gym, along with a pool, poolhouse and lockers are also planned for the community.
The entire site is slated to take up around 16.4 acres west of a nearby flood control channel. The community will be entirely gated and all roads within it will be private.

Floorplans and design concepts for individual homes have not yet been made available online. A Shea Homes marketing representative did not respond to a request for comment.
Change are still being made to the plans. The Cathedral City Planning Commission was scheduled to meet Wednesday, Aug. 19, to discuss a minor change to the height of a wall within the community.
But construction is taking place, although it wasn't clear when it will be finished. Heavy machinery could be seen driving across the property on Tuesday, Aug. 18. However, a salesperson for the company could not say when the first units would be finished.
