Los Angeles County prosecutors announced Tuesday that they will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, the son of acclaimed Hollywood director Rob Reiner, in the high-profile murder case that has drawn national attention.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the decision followed a "careful and thorough review" of the case and included consideration of Reiner family members' views. Nick Reiner, 32, is accused of fatally stabbing his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles in December 2025.
The decision means that if Reiner is convicted, the harshest possible sentence would be life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Why isn't Los Angeles seeking the death penalty against Nick Reiner?
According to Hochman, prosecutors weighed multiple factors before deciding not
to pursue capital punishment.
One factor was input from members of the Reiner family, including Nick Reiner's siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner.
"We took their views into consideration in ultimately deciding not to seek the death penalty," Hochman said during a Sept. 15 news conference.
California still has the death penalty on the books, but executions remain effectively halted under a statewide moratorium that has been in place since 2019. Prosecutors continue to weigh whether seeking a death sentence is appropriate on a case-by-case basis.
What charges does Nick Reiner face?
Nick Reiner has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner.
In August, a Los Angeles County grand jury returned an indictment that included special-circumstance allegations of:
- Multiple murders
- Murder by means of lying in wait
Prosecutors also allege Reiner personally used a deadly weapon, identified as a knife.
Reiner has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The special-circumstance allegations are significant because they make the defendant eligible for a sentence of life without parole if convicted.
When could the Nick Reiner trial begin?
A trial is not expected to begin soon.
During Tuesday's announcement, Hochman said prosecutors are prepared to proceed whenever the defense is ready, but indicated he does not expect a trial to start until 2027.
That means additional court hearings, motions and pretrial proceedings are likely before jurors are selected.

Authorities arrested Nick Reiner on Dec. 14, 2025, after Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 70, were found dead inside their Brentwood residence.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's preliminary findings, both victims died from multiple sharp-force injuries.
Prosecutors allege Nick Reiner stabbed both parents before fleeing. He was formally charged days later and has remained at the center of an ongoing criminal case that has generated intense public interest because of his father's prominence in Hollywood.
