Few can recall the last time Desert Hot Springs High School won a league football title. But the Golden Eagles took a giant step towards one on Friday.
The emphatic 48-0 win over Coachella Valley, a team seeking its third consecutive Desert Valley League title, moved Desert Hot Springs to 6-2 this season and 1-0 in the DVL with two games remaining in the regular season.
In the other DVL game, Yucca Valley topped Banning. The Golden Eagles will host Banning next week and travel to Yucca Valley in the regular season finale.
Desert Hot Springs controlled most of the game on Friday. The Golden Eagles scored on their first drive and drove inside the red zone three other times in the first half, scoring again on one of those possessions.
Defensively,
Desert Hot Springs never allowed the Arabs (3-5) to seriously threaten and finished the game with six quarterback sacks.
Coachella Valley will face Yucca Valley on the road next week and conclude the regular season at home against Banning.
The top two finishers in the league secure automatic CIF Southern Section postseason berths, while the third and fourth place finishers can hope for an at-large bid.
