Let's start with some of the best things I've eaten recently, appetizer edition. Like the Crete Beats, with red and golden beets with stellar, punchy herbed whipped feta and grilled pita at Soul Flavor in Carolina Beach. Or the Spicy Salmon "Tacos" with a daikon slaw at a new Happy Hour special from Tomiko-San. Or a stack of sticky mole ribs (that require more than one napkin) that are served with corn ribs, which has been a recent special at Voyce Bistro in downtown Wilmington. Try one this weekend. - Before opening Voyce, Chef Keith Rhodes and Catch restaurant were among the restaurants on the inaugural USA Today Restaurants of the Year like. - It seems that the new owners of this classic Carolina Beach tiki bar and music venue are really trying to honor the traditions before they close the bar for demolition and redevelopment. If you want another drink, or another order of the tuna nachos, here are some of the details.

- If you've been following along with the occasional nostalgia series, where we have already covered cheese biscuits and Brunswick stew, it's now time for another. I learned more about "little layer cakes" during the reporting – and just how widespread this tradition is. And, luckily, there are a few places to find them loca
- If you're looking for yummy things to do, it's a great weekend in Wilmington. Oktoberfests begin in earnest everywhere from downtown's Docktoberfest, to Leland Brewing Company to Carolina Beach Pier. Plus, the On Island Grindz restaurant group is hosting a Last Call 4 Summer Food & Bev Festival at Fizzy Jane's featuring bites from their chefs.
- And Shuckin' Shack Oyster Bar locations have been raising money for blood cancer research through their Turn the Tide events this month. Now, it's time for their One Day, One Cause. There's the annual Block Party with oysters and live music beginning at noon Saturday (100% of sales will be donated). Look for raffles and more at Leland, an oyster-eating competition and more in downtown Wilmington, and a portion of sales donated in Surf City.
