The North Carolina high school sports 2026-27 season is officially underway, signaling the return of the StarNews’ top performers list.
Each week, we'll compile the best high school sports performances from around the Wilmington area. As the week progresses, we'll add more performances and info on big games.
Stats are collected via MaxPreps and coaches' submissions. If you would like to nominate a top performer, email reporter Michael Cuneo @mcuneo@usatodayco.com with athlete information and stats.
Many top performers will be nominated for the weekly StarNews Athlete of the Week Poll, which returns for the first time this fall on Monday, Aug. 17.

Liam Decker, Fr., Cape Fear Academy: Scored a hat trick in the Hurricanes' 9-0 victory over American Leadership Academy.
Ethan Gatt, Jr., Cape Fear Academy: Assisted on two goals while scoring one of his own.
Andres Torres Romero, Sr., Laney: Picked up a goal and assist as Laney defeated Pinecrest 3-1.
Girls tennis
Elizabeth Sifly, Sr., New Hanover: Went 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles as the Wildcats began the season with a 9-0 win over West Henderson.
Tuesday
Boys soccer
Dylan Flores, Jr., North Brunswick: Scored twice as the Scorpions picked up a season-opening 4-2 win over South Brunswick.
Volleyball
Paige Moyer, Jr., Coastal Christian: Had nine kills and six serving aces as the Centurions defeated Southeastern Christian Academy 3-0.
Mallie Smith, Jr., New Hanover: Recorded 10 kills and three serving aces as the Wildcats swept Cape Fear Academy 3-0 for the program’s first win of the season.
Abby Hendren, Sr., Laney: Had 18 assists and two aces as Laney defeated South Central 3-0.
Parker Wells, Soph., Pender: Had nine aces in the Patriots' 3-1 win over Fairmont.

Norah Davis, Sr., Hoggard: Had 15 kills as the Vikings swept South Brunswick 3-0.
