Students at Shallotte Middle School in Brunswick County are being released early Friday, Oct. 2 because of a nearby fire.
"School officials have reported a noticeable smoke odor inside the building, prompting the district to take precautionary measures," according to a news release from the school district.
Car riders were being release beginning at 9:45 a.m., and buses were expected to arrive at 10 a.m.
Shallotte Middle School is the closest Brunswick County Schools campus to the fire. Other nearby schools, including West Brunswick High School and Union Elementary School, are not experiencing similar indoor smoke conditions at this time and will continue operating
on their regular schedules, the school district said.
The district's operations director has been in contact with the Brunswick County Emergency Operations Center, which confirmed there is currently no outdoor air quality alert for the public," the news release stated. "However, given the school's proximity to the fire and the presence of smoke odor inside the building, district officials decided to dismiss students early out of an abundance of caution."
Families are being notified of the early dismissal and asked to make the necessary transportation arrangements.
