As one shipping container restaurant closes in Wilmington’s Cargo District, a well-known brand is planning a new concept.
Brandon and Elizabeth Shepard closed their hot chicken eatery, Birdbox, Aug. 29. Meanwhile, Dustin Smith, of Fork n Cork and Smoke on the Water, said he’s planning to open Burger Street in that space in the coming weeks.
“It’s an homage to the Patty Wagon days,” Smith said.
Before opening Fork n Cork, Smith's late brother James Smith operated that burger-based food truck in downtown Wilmington.
But Dustin Smith said that Burger Street's menu won't overlap with Fork n Cork's. The new Cargo West spot will focus on smash burgers, hot dogs and brats. They will be available in different styles, named after local streets, that can
come with your choice of base.
The Shepards think it’s a good concept, and still believe in the future of the Cargo District. They originally moved their Emerald Isle-based business Shepard Barbecue to 609 S. 15th St., and then switched to the counter window-friendly Birdbox.
But some setbacks, including a fire in May, have been challenging.
"Given the current economics and the challenges restaurants are facing, we felt it was the right time to step aside,” they said. “And allow another group that is more interested in the opportunity to grow alongside the Cargo District over the long term.”
They added that they are grateful for their regulars and those who offered ongoing support. The Shepards are currently planning their next steps.
“We have a lot of respect for what has been built there, and we’re excited to watch it continue to grow and flourish,” they said.
In addition to burgers and dogs that can come with toppings like chili, cheese and more, Burger Street will also likely offer cheese curds, fries and tots. Smith is also planning to install a cooler stocked with canned sodas and beer.
He added that Burger Street is one of a handful of expansion projects he’s working on.
