An individual survived a jump from the Isabel Holmes Bridge into the Cape Fear River on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Wilmington Police Department officers responded to the Isabel Holmes Bridge in reference to a person in crisis before the person jumped, according to a Aug. 31 Wilmington Police Department news release.
Officers attempted to speak with the individual upon their arrival at around 5:30 p.m. before the individual jumped from the bridge into the Northeast Cape Fear River.
Officers maintained visual contact with the individual and coordinated a water rescue, according to the release.
The Wilmington Fire Department responded by boat, with police officers joining to assist in locating and rescuing the individual, the release states. Additional officers also
used a nearby resident's boat to assist with the rescue efforts.
The individual was successfully rescued from the water and was transported by emergency medical services to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment.
The Wilmington Police Department recognizes the quick response and coordinated efforts of officers, Wilmington Fire Department personnel, EMS and the citizens who assisted during the rescue.
