Aniya Moore was supposed to move into her dorm at Fayetteville State University this month. She was excited about being a Bronco, and she looked forward to beginning her classes there this fall.
But the Watha resident — who graduated from Pender High School in June after battling a cancerous brain tumor during her high school years — is now recovering from a wreck.
On July 24, Moore was driving along Pine Woods Road near her home when she ran off the road, struck a ditch and hit a tree. She said she has no recollection of the accident or what occurred to make her run off the road.
“I have no idea what happened,” Moore said.
Bernadine Munn, Moore’s mother, said they learned about the crash through the Life 360 app, which notified them that Moore had
been in a wreck. She added that Moore’s smart watch also detected the impact and notified 911.
Initially, Moore was unconscious, and she was transported by EMS to Novant Health New Hanover Medical Center. Tatiana Munn, Moore's sister, said Moore was unresponsive and on a ventilator for two to three days before she began breathing on her own and communicating with her family.
Moore’s injuries included a broken femur, a torn diaphragm, internal injuries, and damage to her left arm.
As of Aug. 10, Moore had undergone surgery and was still in the hospital receiving care, but she said she is feeling better and expects to be moved to the rehabilitation hospital later this week.
As she recovers, Moore has been surrounded by her family, and some members of the Pender High School faculty have also stopped by to bring well wishes and messages of encouragement.

Despite this setback, Moore remains focused on the future.
“I’m going to take online classes for the fall semester, and then go in person in the winter,” she said.
