With a hotel already on the way and a new building open, an established shopping center in a Brunswick County waterfront municipality is expecting to grow even more.
Existing restaurants, banks, offices and more currently surround the Rivermist community in Southport's highway commercial district off N.C. 211. The area has seen road expansions and new commercial growth over the last five years, but another project could keep the growth going.
Preliminary major site plans have been submitted for more retail construction in Dutchman Village, City Planner Wendell Biddle confirmed. Here's what's next for the shopping center.
New retail project in review
Kyle Herring of Benesch submitted the project on behalf of the property owner, the Dombroski Family Living Trust, Biddle said.
The proposed project includes two buildings with both retail and office space for the corner of Eason Street and Winafred Street, adjacent to State Employees Credit Union, Biddle said.
No announcements for what could come have been made, Biddle said, noting the office spaces will be leased out if the plan moves to construction.
The project, if approved and built as proposed, will be constructed in phases and would amount to approximately 10,000-square-feet of impervious ground cover, Biddle added.
Once cleared by the technical review committee, the project will be up for planning board approval, Biddle explained.
"It's 100% preliminary and plans are subject to change," Biddle said.
Hotel to break ground soon
Roughly a year ago, the Southport Planning Board granted major site plan approval for a four-story, 103-room Home2 Suites. The hotel will be built off Eason Street inside the Dutchman Village development as well.
Home2 Suites is expected to break ground within the next month, Biddle said.
Shoppes at Dutchman Village open
The Shoppes at Dutchman Village recently opened on the corner of J. Swain Boulevard and Eason Street. Cape Fear Seafood serves as its anchor tenant.
The first floor features retail, while the second and third floors are made for office use.
