The man who was shot after allegedly opening fire on law enforcement officers in Wilmington on Aug. 21 has been identified as 35-year-old Rodney Wilson.
Wilson, who is currently in stable condition, receiving treatment in a hospital, has been charged with firearm by a felon, according to an update from Brandon Shope, the Wilmington Police Department communications specialist.

What happened?
Officers working in partnership with New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 700 block of Red Cross Street around 7:26 p.m. on Aug. 21. The armed man had reportedly pointed a firearm at another person and was acting aggressively, according to the initial call, the Wilmington Police Department said in a news release.
“During the encounter, the armed individual fired shots at law enforcement officers,” the news release said. “In response to an imminent threat, multiple officers discharged their weapons to protect nearby citizens and fellow officers.”
Wilson sustained serious injuries and was taken to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, according to the police department.
The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with policy, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.
What's next?
“The SBI has not been able to speak with the citizen yet due to his condition,” Chad Flowers, the State Bureau of Investigation public information director, wrote in an email Aug. 25.
“The investigation is active, and there is no timeline available,” Flowers said. “When the case has been thoroughly investigated by the SBI, we will share our findings with the DA.”
