A family that has been serving halal and comfort favorites on the streets of New York is bringing that expertise to a new Wilmington restaurant. Munchiesco is in the works for the former Flaming Amy’s Bowl space at 4418 Shipyard Blvd.
The family behind the restaurant moved to the area a few years ago.
“The food here is nice and it's growing a lot,” said Eagle Kassim, who is also a student at University of North Carolina Wilmington. But he and his family said they felt this particular style of food was something missing from the local restaurant scene.
That includes authentic chopped cheese, chicken over rice, and more favorites made with halal ingredients.
“We will have two different styles of restaurant,” Kassim said.
Part of their service will
include build-your-own Mediterranean bowls with a selection of fresh ingredients that are prepared in house -- like chicken, steak, lamb and falafel.
Then, on the back grill, will be the sandwich side, with chopped cheese and cheesesteaks made to order.
“It will be the original,” Kassim said. “Even when I go up to New York, I have to get one.”
They believe that with the growth in the Wilmington area, more people are craving them here, too.
Other than that, they plan to keep pricing low and accessible. They want to begin offering soft opening hours in the coming days and are planning a grand opening event with specials and giveaways.
