A large arboretum and event space is not the only eco-friendly plan onthe town of Leland's plate.
The town is bringing a different kind of growth to the area, using a green thumb to serve the town and save
money.
A development site plan with a hand-drawn greenhouse outline was submitted to the town in late August. The greenhouse is being placed near U.S. 74/76 at the Leland's Municipal Operations Center campus, located at 1970 Popular St. An animal control facility, police station and the Leland Fire and Rescue Station 51 are also near the center.
The greenhouse will not be a community garden. Instead, a variety of seasonal annual plants will be grown by public works staff throughout the year for beautification of town-owned properties, Leland Communications Manager Jessica Jewell said.
"Growing annuals in-house will reduce the cost of purchasing mature plants at a higher cost and provide the town with specific species for certain town-owned and maintained locations," Jewell said.
The eight-foot-by-12-foot "prefabricated greenhouse building" has already been delivered to the site already, said Jewell, noting it is not a major project.
The final placement and connections will occur after all required permits have been approved, and plantings will begin after the building is set up, Jewell said.
