Hundreds of apartments and dozens of townhomes have broken ground along one of New Hanover County’s busiest corridors nearly three years after initially being proposed.
Site plans submitted to the county show that a new subdivision known as Nexus at Whiskey Branch will be built in the 4400 block of South College Road. Located just north of Monkey Junction, the subdivision will expand the existing Whiskey Branch neighborhood, a community with single-family homes and townhomes.
Initially proposed in late 2023, developers worked to secure building permits for the Nexus site throughout 2024 and 2025. The first phase of the planned development includes 250 apartments and 18 carriage units, which feature a ground floor garage with a living quarters
on the upper floor. The second phase will include 49 townhomes. The development will have 3.73 acres of open space across the 16-acre property. The subdivision will have a total of 619 parking spaces.
In July, Whiskey Branch Apartments LLC purchased the land for $4,690,000, according to New Hanover property records. The business is registered to David Couch and Chris Dunbar, who co-founded the High Point-based development firm Blue Ridge Companies.
Hill Rogers of Cameron Property Management said that construction on the “Class A apartment community” commenced in August. The project is expected to be completed by early 2028. Future development will include commercial outparcels, Rogers said.
The plans expand upon the existing Whiskey Branch neighborhood, a gated community just outside Wilmington city limits that finished construction in 2019. The neighborhood features 74 single-family homes and 82 townhomes. Amenities include a saltwater pool, clubhouse, fire pit and community green space. Trusst Builder Group describes Whiskey Branch as a “peaceful sanctuary surrounded by woods and ponds, with a creek bed and swaths of mature trees.”
Available listings for Timber at Whiskey Branch, a 90-unit subdivision, show that four-bedroom homes range from $544,500 to $679,500. Rogers expects the subdivision to be sold out by the second quarter of 2027.
