A Wilmington man is facing additional charges after a person that he allegedly struck with his vehicle succumbed to their injuries.
Christopher Ryan Williams, 48, has been charged with felony death by vehicle in connection with an incident on Aug. 20, according to documents filed in New Hanover County District Court. At Williams' first appearance hearing on Aug. 24, a judge said that the case originated as a felony serious injury, but the victim had passed over the weekend. He also faces charges of driving while impaired and failure to yield.
N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to the incident on U.S. 17, according to court documents. Records note that Williams did not have his driver's license in the vehicle at the time of his arrest.
An Aug.
22 arrest warrant for Williams erroneously lists his own name as the deceased. The District Attorney's office and highway patrol did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the correct identity of the victim.
Williams' bond was set at $100,000, double the initial amount. A representative from the public defender's office noted his prior criminal history was "very old" and that he had a full-time job and was not considered a flight risk.
Williams' next court date is set for Oct. 27.
