Smoky conditions continued Oct. 2 as a result of aforest fire in Shallotte.
North Carolina Forest Service personnel were paged Oct. 1 at approximately 5 p.m. to a fire adjacent to the site of the Quarry Road Fire that occurred in July, the service said.. This new fire is being called the Quarry Road 2 Fire.
The forest service, in a mid-afternoon Facebook post Oct. 2, said mop-up work and control operations continued, with continuing smoldering fuels. Smoke impacts to the surrounding communities are likely, the forest service said.
Shallotte Middle School students were released early on Oct. 2 because of the nearby fire.
“School officials have reported a noticeable smoke odor inside the building, prompting the district to take precautionary measures,”
a school district news release stated.

The forest service said on the evenings of Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 its personnel responded to and worked on an area of reburning fuels within the perimeter of the July fire. This reburning area was controlled on the afternoon of Oct. 1, it said.
Later that evening, forest service personnel were dispatched to the same area for an additional fire occurrence. Four tractor plow units were dispatched and had lines around the fire that evening.
The fire burned 26 acres and created a significant smoke plume, according to the forest service.
