
An armed person who threatened law enforcement officers was shot by officers and sustained serious injuries in Wilmington on Friday, Aug. 21, police said.
The unnamed person had reportedly pointed a firearm at another person and was acting aggressively, according to the initial call, Wilmington police said in a news release.
Officers working in partnership with New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 700 block of Red Cross Street just before 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“Officers located an individual matching the description near Seventh and Red Cross streets,” the news release stated. “During the encounter, the armed individual fired shots at law enforcement officers. In response to an imminent threat, multiple officers discharged
their weapons to protect nearby citizens and fellow officers.”
Emergency personnel responded, and the armed individual was taken to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with policy, the release stated.
