Pender County Schools superintendent Brad Breedlove has been named the 2027 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year. He becomes the first superintendent from Pender County Schools to receive the honor, according to a news release from Pender County Schools.
The award is presented jointly by the North Carolina Association of School Administrators and the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association.
Breedlove was selected from a group of eight regional superintendents of the year. He had previously been awarded the distinction for District 2.
“This really makes me proud of Pender County Schools and what we’ve been able to accomplish,” Breedlove said. “We have done a lot in the last four years as a school system, and it’s hard work. We are
as good as the people that we have, and we have some fantastic people. I think receiving this award is a sign of that.”

“Anytime you dedicate your life to something, and I’m a lifelong educator, you always want to be the best possible teacher, coach or leader you can be,” he said. “To be nominated by my peers and to know how they see Pender County Schools is very powerful.”
Breedlove has served as superintendent of Pender County Schools since January 2023. He previously worked with Union County Public Schools and was named North Carolina Principal of the Year in 2014.
Breedlove will now go on to represent North Carolina in the 2027 National Superintendent of the Year competition at the American Association of School Administrators’ National Conference on Education, scheduled for Feb. 25-27, 2027, in Atlanta.
