The identities of two people who died Sunday, Aug. 2, in Holden Beach after running into trouble in the ocean have been released.
The Holden Beach Police Department identified Daniel Jason Roberts, 46, and Dylan Daniel Roberts, 20, of Lenoir as the two individuals who lost their lives in an ocean-related incident in the 1100 block of Ocean Boulevard West, according to an Aug. 3 news release from the town.
According to Holden Beach Police Chief Steven Barger, the pair were in the ocean in the 1100 block of Ocean Boulevard West when they were spotted in distress around 9:43 a.m.
Efforts by rescue personnel to revive the two adults on the beach were unsuccessful. It wasn't immediately clear what issues
the swimmers had in the water, but the National Weather Service in Wilmington on Sunday morning had issued a "high rip current risk" warning for coastal Brunswick County until 8 p.m. Sunday.
"The Town of Holden Beach extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time," the Aug. 2 release stated. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic loss."
