With the passing of country singer, songwriter, actress and cultural icon Dolly Parton, special events and screenings are being held in the Wilmington area over Labor Day weekend to raise money for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
At Regal Mayfaire Cinemas in Wilmington, there will be daily screenings of Parton's films "Steel Magnolias" and "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" from Sept. 4-9, with 100% of proceeds benefiting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
Tickets will be priced at $9.25 in honor of Parton's hit song "9 to 5." For full screening schedule, go to RegMovies.com.
"As a company headquartered in East Tennessee, Dolly’s impact has always felt especially
close to home for Regal," said Vikki Neil, senior vice president of marketing at Regal, in a news release, noting that Parton hails from Sevier County, Tennessee. "We’re excited to give audiences across the country a way to celebrate her legacy while supporting the Imagination Library.”
Founded by Parton in 1995, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library provides free books each month to children from birth to age 5, regardless of family income. Now an international program, it's estimated that one in six children under age 5 in the United States gets a free book each month through the Imagination Library.
Also in Wilmington this weekend, Forever in Rhinestones: A Celebration of Dolly Parton will take place starting 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4 at The Eagle's Dare on North Third Street. Donations at the door will support Parton's Imagination Library.
There will be DJs spinning Parton tunes, live music from twangy North Carolina rock duo Fancy Gap (which includes former Wilmington musician Stuart McLamb of The Love Language) and special appearances by Wilmington drag queens.
