Wilmington residents cast more than 7,200 votes to choose a winner in a citywide LEGO building competition held ahead of the LEGO Brick Convention, which is scheduled for Sept. 12-13 at the Wilmington Convention Center.

The contest invited members of the public to create custom LEGO builds inspired by favorite places or memories in Wilmington, according to a community announcement. Eight submissions were displayed at City Hall for two weeks and featured online for virtual voting.

Combined voting generated 7,225 votes, including 7,042 cast online and 183 submitted in person.

The top entry, "Veterans Day Parade," was created by Dean Poulos, a local Cub Scout who participates in the parade each year. Poulos said the project was intended to honor veterans.

A model of the Battleship North Carolina titled "Showboat" finished a close second. The creation was built by Mason Gray, 8.
