The war with Iran has hit Georgia drivers at the gas pump, with a new analysis estimating that residentshave collectively paid about $1.43 billion more for gasoline since the conflict began in February.

The analysis from Brown University's Costs of War project estimates that the additional cost works out to roughly $356 per Georgia household across the state's approximately 4.3 million households.

The estimate comes as gasoline prices remain elevated in Georgia. AAA reported an average price of $3.7769 per gallon for regular unleaded in Georgia on Aug. 31, compared with $2.9033 at the same time last year.

How much have Georgia gas prices changed?

According to the Brown analysis, regular gasoline in Georgia was averaging $2.785 per gallon on Feb. 28, when the war began.

The current price

used in the analysis is $3.777 per gallon, representing an increase of about 99 cents per gallon, or 35.6%, over 184 days.

The study estimates Georgia is using about 13 million gallons of gasoline per day this month. When the additional cost at the pump is applied across that consumption, the analysis estimates Georgia residents have spent about $1.43 billion more on gasoline since the war began.

What Georgia drivers are paying for gas now

AAA'slatest Georgia average was $3.7769 per gallon Monday.

The statewide price remains below Georgia's record average of $4.4991 per gallon, set in June 2022, but it is considerably higher than it was a year ago.

The Brown analysis is an estimate of the additional cost associated with higher gasoline prices. It does not mean every Georgia household has personally spent $356 more on gas, since the amount any household pays depends on factors such as how much it drives and how much gasoline it uses.
