Upgrades to a community center, road closures and an update from the animal shelter highlight a list of happenings in Effingham County. Here are three things to know this week.
Road closures
Multiple intersections in Effingham County are slated for road improvements this week and the county says lane closures will be in effect at the following intersections: Blue Jay Road and Hodgeville Road, Goshen Road and Hodgeville Road and Kolic Helmey Road and Hodgeville Road.
Curb and gutter, base and pavement, sidewalks and driveway work will be conducted for roundabout projects. In addition, drainage improvements will take place in the Hunter's Chase and lane closures are expected in that area as well.
"Please slow down, stay alert in work zones and plan for additional
travel time," reads a statement from the county. "We appreciate your patience and cooperation while these roadway improvements continue."
Clyo Community Center
A gathering space in one of Effingham County's unincorporated community's is getting significant renovations.
The county is improving conditions at Clyo Community Center, including a brand-new basketball court, walking trail upgrades, baseball field improvements, playground site work and fencing among other things. Upgrades are expected to cost $2.2 million. The project is being funded through Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
"The project is designed to enhance both organized recreation and everyday opportunities for residents to gather, exercise and enjoy the outdoors," reads a statement from the county. "It’s another example of how SPLOST dollars are being invested in Effingham County communities, helping improve facilities and create better recreational opportunities for residents of all ages."
Pet adoptions
The Effingham County Animal Shelter needs the community's help as it has welcomed a few new furry friends to its facility, prompting the need for more adoptions. Kitten Marge and dogs Denver, Stella and Chloe are in need of a new home. Adoption fees have been waived for the time being. Visit the animal shelter on Highway 119 for more information.
