Georgia and Alabama don’t agree on much, but Zaxby’s is hoping fans on both sides of the state line can get behind its newest menu item.
The Atlanta-based chain is adding a new dipping option to its lineup of signature sauces, and the restaurant chain is turning to an Alabama native to introduce it.
Beginning Aug. 4, participating Zaxby’s locations nationwide will serve Alabama White BBQ Sauce
while supplies last. The tangy, peppery sauce joins the chain’s lineup of 12 signature sauces for a limited run.
To promote the launch, Zaxby’s partnered with Alabama native and reality television personality Rob Rausch, who has longstanding ties to the chicken chain.
What is Alabama white barbecue sauce?
Unlike traditional tomato-based barbecue sauces, Alabama white barbecue sauce is made with
a mayonnaise base and seasoned with vinegar, black pepper and other spices, giving it a tangy, savory flavor.
It is most commonly paired with smoked or grilled chicken.
The sauce originated in northern Alabama and is widely credited to Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q in Decatur, where it was created in the 1920s. Today, it has become one of the state’s signature culinary traditions and has gained popularity well beyond Alabama.
Zaxby’s said its version was developed after testing hundreds of recipes.
“As a brand with Southern roots, it was only a matter of time before we introduced Alabama White BBQ Sauce,” Patrick Schwing, Zaxby’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement. “We developed and tasted hundreds of recipes before landing on one we believed was truly worthy of the name.”
Why is Rob Rausch promoting Zaxby’s new sauce?
Rausch, who is from Florence, Alabama, became a breakout star after appearing on Season 5 of Love Island USA and Peacock's The Traitors. Before gaining national recognition, he worked at a local Zaxby’s restaurant, which the company says was his first job.
According to Zaxby’s, Rausch has also frequently mentioned the chain’s Kickin Chicken Sandwich, making him a natural fit to promote a sauce inspired by his home state.
“Alabama White BBQ isn’t just a sauce, it represents our state’s barbecue heritage,” Rausch said in a statement. “Everyone has a recipe they swear by, so I don’t say this lightly: Zaxby’s absolutely nailed it.”
Who is Rob Rausch?
Rausch, a Florence native, has already made a name for himself through his social media presence and daring wildlife encounters.
He attended the University of North Alabama from 2017 to 2020 and developed a passion for wildlife, particularly snakes. He shares his experiences wrangling reptiles on TikTok, where he has amassed over two million followers.
When is Zaxby’s Alabama White BBQ Sauce available?
The limited-edition Alabama White BBQ Sauce launches Tuesday, Aug. 4, at participating Zaxby’s restaurants nationwide. Customers can also order it through the Zaxby’s app and online while supplies last.
The company described the sauce as a limited batch and said it will no longer be available once inventory is depleted.
Founded in 1990, Atlanta-based Zaxby’s has more than 1,000 locations in 24 states.
