A recall involvingmore than 160,000 pounds of raw pork, beef and goat productsincludes meat shipped to a Georgia distributor for further distribution to retail and restaurant locations nationwide.
Star Meat Delivery Inc., based in Lucama, North Carolina, is recalling approximately 167,639 pounds of raw meat products that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection, according to theU.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The products also bear a false USDA mark of inspection with the establishment number "EST. 1363."
What meat is being recalled?
The recalled products include various cuts of raw pork, beef and goat sold in bulk under the A&D Foods label.
The products were vacuum-sealed and packed into cardboard boxes for shipment. Individual
consumer packages may not have the A&D Foods labeling because retail stores may have applied their own stickers with pricing and safe-handling instructions.
The recalled products include:
- Goat cuts
- Goat burn skin-on cuts
- Sliced ribeye
- Thin-sliced beef chuck
- Beef oxtail
- Beef short ribs
- Beef shanks
- Ground pork
- Pork chorizo
- Bone-in pork chops
- Pork feet
- Pork rib pieces
- Diced and sliced pork Boston cuts
- Menudo mix
- Pork hock
- Beef ribs
- Beef short ribs
- Beef feet
FSIS said additional products and labels could be added to the recall as more information becomes available.
Why was the meat recalled?
According to FSIS, the products were produced without the benefit of federal inspection and carry a false establishment number.
The establishment number "EST. 1363" does not have a federal grant of inspection, the agency said.
The problem was discovered during FSIS surveillance activities.
FSIS said food produced without inspection may contain undeclared allergens, harmful bacteria or other contaminants that could pose a risk to consumers.
What should Georgia consumers do?
FSIS is concerned that some of the recalled meat could still be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers, as well as at restaurants or retailers.
Consumers who purchased the recalled products are urged not to eat them. Retailers and restaurants should not sell or serve the products.
The USDA recommends that recalled products be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
There have been no confirmed reports of illness or injury associated with consumption of the recalled products, according to FSIS.
Anyone concerned about an illness or injury should contact a healthcare provider.
Where did the recalled products go?
The recalled products were shipped to A&D Foods, a distributor in Duluth, Georgia, for further distribution to retail and restaurant locations nationwide.
FSIS said retail distribution lists will be posted on its recall website when they are available.
