Two people died over the weekend in unrelated crashes in Beaufort and Jasper counties, including one collision involving a wrong-way driver on U.S. Highway 17.
The Jasper County crash occurred around 1:16 a.m. Oct. 12 on U.S. Highway 17 near Okatie Highway and involved two vehicles, stated Master Trooper Brandon Bolt in a posted South Carolina Highway Patrol report.
The SCHP reported stated a 2014 BMW was traveling south on the northbound side of U.S. 17 when it collided head-on with a 2027 tractor trailer traveling correctly in that lane, stated Bolt's report.
The driver of the BMW, the sole occupant of that vehicle, was pronounced dead, while the tractor trailer operator was transported to an area hospital for injuries.
As of Monday evening, Oct.
12, the Jasper County Coroner's Office has not released the identity of the deceased.
The SCHP says the crash remains under investigation.
The single-vehicle Beaufort County crash occurred around 10:10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, along Marshland Road.
The SCHP report stated that a 2018 Dodge Charger was traveling south when the driver appeared to lose control, exited the left side of the road, and struck a utility pole and two trees.
That driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced deceased. That crash also remains under investigation by the SCHP.
This weekend marked the 17th traffic fatality of the year in Beaufort County, and the 15th in Jasper County, reports the S.C. Department of Public Safety's website.
Statewide, six people were reported killed on S.C. roadways from 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, through midnight Sunday, Oct. 11, reports the SCDPS.
