Two people were killed Monday morning on I-95 Northbound near Richmond Hill after what deputies described as a serious crash.
The incident occurred at 6:15 a.m. early where Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers working off-duty detail on the 6-lane highway discovered two deceased construction workers in the roadway.
According to a Georgia State Patrol, a Freightliner box truck failed to maintain its lane and crossed into the right shoulder, striking a Ford truck, pushing the vehicle across three lanes. Two workers were outside the Ford truck picking up traffic control equipment when the crash occurred.
"The Ford continued over the guard rail and came to rest on the grass median next to the southbound lanes," says GSP. "The box truck came to a final
rest on the guardrail and against the Ford. The driver of the box truck was released from the scene pending further investigation."
GSP says the investigation is ongoing.
The city of Richmond Hill stated on their Facebook page that they are asking community members to be mindful and respectful when commenting on posts related to crashes.
"It is not the place for details about injuries or loss of life, and it is never the place for speculation," reads the statement. "That information belongs to law enforcement and, first, to the families. It is also not the place for unrelated comments. Somewhere, a family is scrolling this page looking for news about someone they love. A joke or a casual greeting under that post reads very differently to them than it does to you. Thank you to everyone who has kept the comments respectful. That is who this community is."
