Learn to make gnocchi and French classics at Savannah’s Hotel Bardo
Many Savannahians still don’t realize Hotel Bardo offers hands-on culinary programming that is open to guests and locals alike. On Friday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. join Chef Lawrence DiJoseph, Jr. at the Cooking School at Saint Bibiana to learn “The Art of Gnocchi.” Northern Italy is known for the kind of cooking that feels both rustic and deeply comforting, and gnocchi perfectly fills this space. You will make potato gnocchi from scratch, learning how to handle the dough to achieve a perfectly soft, pillowy texture before pairing it with a fragrant herb Bolognese. The meal continues with vanilla-scented cake and almond mousse.
Or perhaps you prefer to be transported to a café in Paris on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. as Chef Lawrence teaches “Parisian
Classics” with a menu that includes mushroom tartines, a crisp bistro salad with vinaigrette, and delicate pate a choux filled with cream. Along the way, you will learn the fundamentals behind each dish from balancing acidity and richness to creating light, airy pastry with perfect texture.
The Cooking School at Saint Bibiano is located at 700 Drayton Street. View the complete class schedule and purchase your tickets ($124) under the Cooking School tab at www.saint-bibiana.com

Savannah cookbook shop welcomes Native American chef to debut book
Coastal Table and Tales, Savannah’s only cookbook shop and global recreational cooking space, is excited to welcome acclaimed Native American chef and Food Network competitor Crystal Wahpepah later this month. Reserve your spot now as she brings her debut cookbook, A FEATHER AND A FORK: 125 Intertribal Dishes from an Indigenous Food Warrior (Rodale, 2026), to delicious life.

Wahpepah is a registered member of the Kickapoo Nation of Oklahoma and the creative tour de force behind the inventive, healthy, delicious dishes served at her Oakland, CA. restaurant, Wahpepah’s Kitchen. An inductee into the Native American Almanac, Wahpepah was a finalist for the James Beard Emerging Chef Award and has appeared on Food Network’s Chopped, Alex vs. America and Beat Bobby Flay. During her visit to Savannah, Wahpepah will participate in three events:
Kickapoo Chili Cooking Demonstration, 6-8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 11
Wahpepah cooks her signature Kickapoo Chili and Sweet Blue Cornbread, dishes based upon her tribal heritage. During the cooking demo, she will be in conversation with award-winning Savannah-based journalist Amy Paige Condon, Wahpepah’s collaborator on A Feather and a Fork. Guests should come hungry, come curious, and leave with a signed copy of the cookbook that offers a deeper appreciation for the food heritage that's always belonged at the table.
A Feather and a Fork Cooking Class, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12
Pulling recipes straight from the cookbook and using fresh-from-the-farmers’ market ingredients, guests cook alongside Wahpepah as she assembles a brunch of Corn Cakes with Wild Onions, Bison-Blueberry Sausage, Strawberry-Sumac Salad with Maple-Sage Vinaigrette, and Blackberry-Cornbread Pudding.
Stories on a Plate Cookbook Club, 6-8pm, Saturday, Sept. 12
Pick a recipe from A Feather and a Fork and bring it, potluck style, to Coastal Table and Tales’ monthly cookbook club gathering. Chef Wahpepah will join members for a group discussion of the book, its stories, and its powerful message that good food is good medicine.
Coastal Table and Tales is located at 408A Bull Street and seating is limited; Reserve your place at the table at coastaltableandtalessavannah.com
Discover the local flavors of Savannah’s Sandfly Neighborhood
As summer reaches its hot, slow demise, I remind you to support our locally owned restaurants that work so hard all year long. The Sandfly neighborhood, at the intersection of Norwood/Ferguson Avenues and Skidaway Road, offers a plethora of local cafes and restaurants deserving of our attention! From Cutters Point Coffee Shop to Auspicious Bakery, to south-of-the-border menus at Tequilla’s Town and Jalapeno’s Mexican Grill, fresh seafood at Driftaway Café or Castaways, build-your-own pizza at Your Pie (soon to move into a free-standing building on Skidaway), to the down-home soul food of Belly’s at Sandfly or at the Norwood Tavern, there is something for every palate!
And let’s not forget sushi, noodle bowls and classic Chinese at Ming Asian Fusion, the freshly smoked meats and homemade sides at Sandfly BBQ, Loco’s Chicken & Waffles, the 5 Spot Sandfly family restaurant (with its daily Happy Hour), and the New York deli meats and enormous sandwiches served at Rocky’s NY Deli and Italian Catering! No time to eat out or to cook? Simply pick up a delicious pre-cooked meal from What’s For Dinner? on Ferguson Avenue and heat it up at home. They offer chicken pot pies, baked spaghetti, breakfast casseroles, meatloaf and two sides, and much, much more!
