The National Weather Service says hot conditions will continue across Georgiafor several days, with afternoon thunderstorms possible and heat index values reaching dangerous levels in some areas.

Georgia is heading into another stretch of intense summer heat, with temperatures expected to climb into the upper 90s and reach around 100 degrees in parts of the state through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service office in Atlanta, the hot pattern is expected to remain in place for the next. Isolated to scattered afternoon thunderstorms could also develop each day through early next week.

The combination of high temperatures and humidity will make it feel even hotter in several Georgia communities.

According to the NWS, here are the highs for the rest of the week:

Athens:
- 97 Thursday (Heat index value could reach 106)
- 100 Friday (Heat index value could reach 108)
Augusta:
- 99 Thursday (Heat index value could reach 110)
- 100 Friday (Heat index value could reach 110)
Savannah:
- 97 Thursday (Heat index value could reach 110)
- 98 Friday (Heat index value could reach 113)
Blue Ridge:
- 89 Thursday
- 90 Friday
Macon:
- 96 Thursday (Heat index value could reach 106)
- 97 Friday (Heat index value could reach 106)

What happens after Friday?

The heat is expected to continue into the weekend.

According to the NWS, Athens could reach 101 degrees Saturday before dropping back to around 98 Sunday. Augusta could also reach 101 Saturday, followed by a high near 98 Sunday.

Savannah is forecast to remain in the upper 90s through Sunday, while Macon could see highs between 97 and 98 degrees.

Blue Ridge will remain comparatively cooler, with highs around 91 degrees Saturday and Sunday.

When could storms develop?

The heat won't be the only weather factor.

According to the NWS forecasts, daily chances for showers and thunderstorms increase primarily during the afternoon and evening hours.

The NWS Atlanta says the summertime pattern is expected to continue into early next week, meaning Georgians could see more rounds of afternoon thunderstorms alongside the heat.
