Thursday, August 13: Feeling the need for speed on a sluggish August evening? The Lucas Theater for the Arts continues its “Endless Summer” series with a 40th-anniversary
screening of the 1986 classic “Top Gun.” Tom Cruise rides into the danger zone as Maverick, a hot-shot flier entering the Navy’s prestigious Top Gun program. Thursday, August 13: The Historic Savannah Theatre stages Les Misérables from August 13 through September 6. Set against the backdrop of revolutionary France, this epic musical tells a moving story of hope, redemption, sacrifice, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Friday, August 14: The Otis S. Johnson Cultural Arts Center hosts “Not Away,” a group show with installation artists Kelly Boehmer, Monica Cioppettini, and Christopher Nitsche in which each artist takes to heart a truism by Jenny Holzer, “When you throw something away, what does away mean?” They reconsider found objects and obsess over materials destined for the landfill to produce sculptural works that vary in style, form, and scale. The show is installed through September 26. Times are 6- 8 p.m. in the Visual Arts Gallery of the Otis S. Johnson Cultural Arts Center, 210 Montgomery St.
Saturday, August 15: Free Family Day and back-to-school event at Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center features hands-on activities inspired by the “Impression and Modernity” exhibit. Enjoy free admission for locals and all-ages art-making; see local plein air landscape artists Lori Keith Robinson and Mike Mills at work; become part of a “living painting” and have your photo taken in an Impressionist scene; and take a “weather tour” of the exhibition with meteorologist Patrick Prokop. Sunday, August 16: Didn’t score a spot in Kitten Yoga? You can still get your kitten fix by checking out the family-friendly Streets to Treats pet adoption event at Service Brewing. It’s all about puppy love and kitty kisses at the brewery’s annual event partnering with the Humane Society for Greater Savannah, Renegade Paws Rescue, and One Love Animal Rescue. Participating rescues will have dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens available for adoption. Times are 2-4 p.m. at Service Brewing, 574 Indian St.
