Did you know the CDC calls mosquitoes the world's deadliest animal? That's because these tiny pests aren't just annoying, they kill more people than any other creature by spreading diseases like malaria, Zika, and (most recently) West Nile virus in Georgia.

The Georgia Department of Public Health issued a news release Wednesday that three mosquito samples in Chatham County tested positive for West Nile virus.
These are in addition to recent cases found in DeKalb and Fulton counties.
Symptoms of West Nile virus
According to the Cleveland Clinic, most West Nile patients are asymptomatic. But, 1 in 5 may develop symptoms like a fever, rash, and muscle aches. More serious conditions may develop seizures, paralysis, or even coma.
Is West Nile virus deadly?
West Nile is fatal in about 1 out of 10 people with
nervous system infections (or about 1 in 1,500 people with West Nile).
Is there a cure for West Nile virus?
There is not a specific cure for West Nile.
West Nile virus treatment
There aren't any antiviral medications that treat West Nile. You can treat mild cases with over-the-counter cold/flu medicine. More serious cases may require hospitalizations with treatments to address the symptoms.
How many people in Georgia were infected by mosquitoes?
According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, between 2020 and 2024, reported mosquito-borne diseases among residents include 277 cases of malaria, 102 of West Nile virus, 89 of dengue, and less than five cases of chikungunya, eastern equine encephalitis, and la crosse encephalitis virus.
How to get rid of mosquitoes
Mosquitoes love standing water, so address anything that may collect water such as cups, tarps, open garbage cans, etc. Old tires are particularly common larval habitats. Make sure any drainage ditches are free of overgrown grass or any other obstructions preventing the flow of water.

- DEET
- Picaridin
- Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus or PMD: "Products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus specifies that they should not to be used on children under the age of 3."

Can mosquitoes bite through clothes?
Orkin says mosquitoes can bite through clothes if the fabric is thin and tight fitting. But, any coverage of your skin will still reduce the likelihood.
