As Georgia'smountains prepare for a colorful fall, it'salmost time for one of the season's favorite traditions, apple picking.
From scenic orchards in North Georgia to fresh cider, apple pies and other fall treats, there's plenty of reason to make a trip to the mountains this season.

When is the best time to go apple picking in Georgia?
Most U-pick orchards in North Georgia open from late August through October, but weekends in September and early October are peak for both apples and fall fun.
1. B.J. Reece Orchards in Ellijay
Located at 9131 Hwy. 52 E., B.J. Reece Orchards is a classic destination for apple picking with a side of country charm.
They grow 20
different varieties on 120 acres and are especially known for their honey crisp and red delicious.
Weekends also include:
- Apple cannons
- Wagon rides
- Pony rides
- Petting zoos
- Pig races
2. The Folk Collaborative in McCaysville
Located at 2984 Mobile Rd., "you’ll pick apples straight from the tree, sun-warmed and ripe with the season’s best," according to the website.
3. Hillcrest Orchards in Ellijay
Located at 9696 Hwy. 52 E., Hillcrest Orchards is best known for its weekend festival, the Apple Pickin’ Jubilee, featuring live music, clogging, and carnival-style eats.
Daily apple picking also runs throughout the fall.
4. Mercier Orchardsin Blue Ridge
Located at 8660 Blue Ridge Dr., Mercier Orchards offers seasonal wines and hard apple ciders that are local favorites, according to Explore Georgia.
The orchard was one of the first in Georgia to grow, press, ferment, and bottle its own beverages on-site, a true farm-to-bottle experience.
5. R & A Orchards in Ellijay
Located at 5505 GA-52, R & A Orchards offers a relaxed picking experience with 160 acres of fruits and vegetables, plus weekend tractor rides and U-pick flowers.
"Since 1947 when the first trees were planted, this orchard and family business has been growing," Explore Georgia wrote.
6. Red Apple Barn in Ellijay
Located at 3379 Tails Creek Rd. Red Apple Barn gives you more than just apples, your admission includes a tractor ride, a cup of cider, a cider doughnut, and flower picking, plus access to kid-friendly games and pumpkin painting.
