The start of fall isn't until Tuesday. But, hummingbirds are already seen all over the country flying into gardens, eating, then continuing their journeys south as part of their seasonal migration. Georgia will be one of their pit stops.

AccuWeather and Mississippi State University Extension Service predicts migratory hummingbirds will be here around Sept. 27 and will start crossing out of Georgia around Oct. 4.

What hummingbirds are native to Georgia?
Georgia is home to 11 hummingbird species, according to Georgia Wildlife. The only one known to nest in Georgia is the ruby-throated hummingbird. Here are the other native species:

- Rufous hummingbird
- Calliope hummingbird
- Magnificent hummingbird
- Allen's hummingbird
- Anna's hummingbird
- Broad-billed hummingbird
- Green violet-ear hummingbird
- Green-breasted mango hummingbird

How long do hummingbirds live?
An analysis by
the American Bird Conservancy indicates that the majority of hummingbirds only live a few years at most. They are fairly vulnerable due to habitat loss, weather, collisions, and other factors. However, depending on the species, some may live up to 8-12 years.
How to make hummingbird food
Hummingbirds need fuel on their journey. You can feed hummingbirds a nectar solution of 1 part sugar to 4 parts warm water in a feeder, bringing these charming visitors right to your yard. Be sure to clean your feeders weekly with a rinse of vinegar and hot water, and always discard any cloudy or old nectar. It's essential to prevent mold from forming on the feeders to keep them safe for the hummingbirds.
It's wise to place multiple feeders around your home, as male hummingbirds can be territorial and frequently clash with other males vying for access to the feeder.

How to attract hummingbirds
Hummingbirds are drawn to red flowers, so planting petunias, salvia and hibiscus around your home and garden can help attract them.
When will hummingbirds be back?
Based on the last few years' patterns, hummingbirds are expected to cross back into the southern portions of Georgia around mid-to-late March depending on weather developments.
