Several Georgia communities are marking the 25th anniversary of theSept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks Friday with memorial ceremonies, moments ofsilence and events honoringthe victims and first responders.
But if you missed the morning ceremonies, there are still several opportunities to participate in 9/11 remembrance across Georgia Friday afternoon and evening.
Here are some events you can still attend.
Marietta
The 9/11Field of Flags Memorialat Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park held its memorial on Friday morning.
However, the display features 2,977 American flags, representing each person killed in the Sept. 11 attacks and it will remain on display through Sept. 19.
Georgia Tech service project
Georgia Tech is marking the anniversary through an afternoon of service.
The university
is partnering with Hands On Atlanta for a food-packing service project from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday.
The project is designed to honor the anniversary through community service and help address food insecurity in metro Atlanta. Transportation from the Georgia Tech campus is provided for registered student volunteers.
Registration is required to participate.
Clayton County
Clayton County is hosting a 9/11 Police vs. Fire Basketball Showdown from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.
The event will be held at the Virginia Burton Gray Recreation Center at 1475 E. Fayetteville Road in Riverdale.
Fayetteville
Fayetteville's 9/11 remembrance event takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at City Center Park. The ceremony will include a presentation of colors, musical tributes, bagpipes and guest speakers.
Organizers also have a helicopter flyover planned, followed by a Tribute in Light. City Center Park is located at 210 Stonewall Avenue West in Fayetteville.
Suwanee
Suwanee will hold its 9/11 Memorial Event at 6 p.m. Friday at Remembrance Plaza in Town Center Park. The plaza features a steel remnant from one of the former World Trade Center towers.
The ceremony will include remarks from Mayor Jimmy Burnette, a guest speaker who was directly affected by the attacks and a flag and wreath-laying ceremony led by the Gwinnett County Fire Department.
Other events happening Friday
Some communities held their main ceremonies earlier Friday morning, including Columbia County, Clayton County, Dunwoody and others.
The City of Dunwoody, however, is keeping its 9/11 exhibit open at City Hall until 4 p.m. Friday. The exhibit, from the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, is titled "September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World."
The 9/11 anniversary is also being observed nationally with ceremonies and memorial events throughout the day, including an afternoon ceremony at the Flight 93 National Memorial that is being livestreamed at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
