Dozens of Savannah Police Department (SPD) officers are currently responding to a barricaded subject on E. Anderson Street and E. Broad Street following a shooting on Thursday evening.
SPD Public Information Officer Jason Broome said he first received word of the shooting at 4:11 p.m.
Broome said one victim was shot and sustained serious injuries in the shooting and was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center for further treatment.
SPD officers and its SWAT team, Chatham County Sheriff Richard Coleman and his deputies, Georgia State Patrol and Savannah Fire are on the scene.
At the time of publication, officers were staked out behind trees across the street from the suspected shooter's location.
Jaron Maine, who lives on Atlantic
Avenue, told the Savannah Morning News that he began to hear a flood of sirens around 4:30 p.m.
“When the cops continued driving down the road, it was like, obviously there was a situation,” he said.
Mayor Van Johnson arrived on the scene at 6:05 p.m.
