A case that has remained unsolved for nearly 30 years may be coming to a close.
On Friday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced they had arrested and charged James Lawrence III, 47, of Irwin County in connection with the death of 20-year-old Christy Dawn Myers.
Christy Dawn Myers died in 1998
According to GBI records, at the time of her death, Myers was living in Broxton with her common-law husband and their small child. On Sept. 14, 1998, she left her home to go to a store. Witnesses saw her at the store and leaving it alone in her own vehicle.
Myers' body was discovered shortly after midnight by a neighbor after witnesses reported hearing a conversation, then a vehicle accelerating.

Lawrence was identified as a suspect through forensic evidence. He's been charged with
felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault. He was taken into custody Thursday and booked at the Coffee County Jail.
Gov. Brian Kemp posted to his social media channels, praising the dedication of GBI and Coffee County officials for helping Myers' family receive "the justice they deserve."
Lawrence is innocent until proven guilty, and the investigation remains active and ongoing. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
Where is Broxton GA?
Broxton is a small area of just over 1,000 residents in south Georgia. It's about 48 miles northwest of Waycross and about 67 miles southeast of Cordele.
