Two people are dead following what Savannah police describe as an apparent murder-suicide in the 600 block of East Broad Street on Thursday afternoon.
Savannah Police Department Chief Lenny Gunther told reporters at the scene that officers received a 911 call reporting a shooting shortly before 4 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound in the street, Gunther said. The victim was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he later died.
Gunther said the suspected shooter barricaded himself inside a home he shared with the victim.
Dozens of law enforcement officers responded to the scene, including members of the Savannah Police Department's Hostage Negotiator Team and SWAT team, as well
as personnel from the Chatham County Sheriff's Office, Georgia State Patrol, Savannah Fire Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
After entering the residence, officers found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted wound.
"We're still processing the scene and working with the families of both individuals," Gunther said.
The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information will be published as it becomes available.
