Savannah Technical College and Ogeechee Technical College have a message: aspiring pilots wanted.
The two regional technical schools are launching a second cohort for Private Pilot Ground School, according to a Savannah Tech press release. The program, offered at both colleges, is a six-week course preparing aspiring pilots for the Federal Aviation Administration Private Pilot Knowledge Test.
The program is offered in partnership with Savannah Aviation flight school and creates a first step towards earning an FAA private pilot certificate, the press release said.
“This course removes barriers for people who have always wanted to learn about aviation but weren't sure where to begin," said Tim McGrew, Director of Operations at Savannah Aviation.
"Whether someone dreams of becoming a professional pilot or simply wants to fly for personal enjoyment, ground school is the first step."
The course costs $1,000 and classes will meet on both campuses, two days a week during the evenings.
Here is the schedule for each college.
Ogeechee Tech: Mondays and Wednesdays (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) on Sept. 21 – Oct. 28
Savannah Tech: Tuesdays and Thursdays (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) on Sept. 22 – Oct. 29
The program gives students not only the know-how to pass the exam but also introduces them to the aviation industry more broadly. Students will learn about the progression from private pilot certification to advanced ratings and other professional opportunities, the press release said.
College leaders envision the program expanding to flight training options and a professional pilot education pathway.
"Aviation is more accessible than many people realize," said Grant Oliver, Assistant Chief Flight Instructor at Savannah Aviation. "We also know that committing to flight training is a big step. We are happy to arrange discovery flights to take students up in an actual plane first, giving them the opportunity to make sure this is a path they truly want to take."
