The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society will bring hundreds of walkers, families and supporters to Forsyth Park on Oct. 17 for its 21st Annual Buddy Walk, a fundraiser that supports programs and services for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. and the one-mile walk starts at 10:30 a.m., according to a community announcement. Activities, including speakers, self-advocates, live music and support from SCAD athletic teams, are scheduled to continue until 2 p.m.

The event is held each October during National Down Syndrome Awareness Month and celebrates the abilities and achievements of individuals with Down syndrome. Organizers say money raised through the walk supports programs and services offered
by the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society.
“This event is all about coming together as a community to support and celebrate individuals with Down syndrome,” said Candy Bogardus, LDSS president. “Every step we take at the Buddy Walk makes a real difference in the lives of families across our region. We encourage everyone to come out, participate and help us continue our mission.”
Funds support local programs and family services
Proceeds from the fundraiser help support Camp Buddy, a summer program in Chatham and Effingham counties that is designed to help students maintain academic and social skills during summer break.
Funds also help pay for family support meetings, new-parent information packets and educational opportunities for families and advocates throughout the region, according to the announcement.
Organizers said the first Savannah Buddy Walk took place in 2006 shortly after the organization was founded. Attendance eventually grew to more than 5,000 people annually before the pandemic, and the upcoming event marks the walk’s 21st edition.

Registration, sponsorships and volunteer opportunities available
Community members can participate by joining an existing team, registering as an individual walker, creating a team, sponsoring the event or making a donation.
