An investigation has been requested into the potential misuse of license plate reader technology by a Chatham County Police Department officer.
The department has requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation look into the matter, according to a community announcement.
The officer in question resigned Aug. 31, 2026, after being questioned about the possible misuse of the Flock License Plate Reader system, according to the announcement.
The activity reportedly occurred in late 2024 and the first two weeks of January 2025. It was not detected during the department's internal audits, which date back to Jan. 1, 2025.
Department emphasizes importance of public trust
The Chatham County Police Department began using license plate readers in 2020.
“Our policy on the use of License Plate Readers was
clear to every officer before we activated this technology in 2020,” said Chatham County Police Chief Jeff Hadley. “Public trust is of the utmost importance to the Chatham County Police Department, and misuse of any law enforcement technology will not be tolerated.”
