Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 660 will hold a flag retirement ceremony Saturday, an event held to properly dispose of American flags.
Community members are encouraged to participate at 10 a.m. at 5115 Ogeechee Rd. During the ceremony, flags are placed in a burn pit in a controlled environment. VFW Post 660 Historian and Media Relations Chairman Daniel Jackson said it is also a good time to reflect and remember what the flag represents.
"If it is dropped in dirt, old or coming apart or sun faded, the proper way to dispose of it is by burning it," said Jackson. "We all have our rights to do what we want to do in terms of the flag, but it is not just something you just throw away. Every couple of months when we couple get enough, we hold a flag ceremony.
It educates the public how to properly dispose of it but also gets exposure for VFW."
The post supports local families and veterans through various programs and events, according to a press release. Jackson said the event also provides opportunities for the community to engage with prior military servicemen and women.
"The military and veterans, you only hear about them when something bad happens," said Jackson. 'It is important for the public to come face-to-face with people that are defending our country. They are people just like us - great friends and families who will do just about anything you need."
