Second-installment property tax bills have been mailed to Chatham County property owners, with a payment deadline set for Nov. 16, according to a community announcement.
The bills reflect the state’s Homeowner Tax Relief Grant (HTRG) for 2026, which provides up to an $18,000 reduction in assessed value for eligible homesteaded properties.
“We want homeowners to understand exactly what they are seeing on their 2026 tax bills,” Chatham County Tax Commissioner Sonya L. Jackson said in the announcement. “This year’s bills include important tax relief provisions, including changes to Chatham County’s homestead exemptions and the state’s Homeowner Tax Relief Grant. We encourage everyone to review their bill and make sure they understand their exemptions,
credits and payment responsibility. Eligible homesteaded properties receive up to a $18,000 reduction in assessed value, which can lower your property tax bill. HTRG does not apply to non-homesteaded properties.”

Property owners have several payment options
Property owners can pay their taxes online, by mail or in person at a Chatham County Tax Commissioner’s Office. The county's website, tax.chathamcountyga.gov, offers bill viewing and payment, appointment scheduling and current office wait times.
“We understand that receiving a property tax bill can sometimes raise questions, and our goal is to make the payment process as convenient, accessible, and straightforward as possible,” Jackson said in the announcement. “Our team is committed to providing every taxpayer with excellent customer service and ensuring that we efficiently collect and disburse the tax dollars entrusted to our office.”
The Chatham County Tax Commissioner’s Office collected 99.5% of property taxes billed in 2025, according to the announcement.
The office is responsible for billing, collecting and distributing property tax revenues to the appropriate taxing authorities. However, it does not determine property values or set millage rates; those responsibilities fall to the respective taxing and assessment authorities.
Property taxes paid by mortgage companies? What to know
Property owners whose taxes are paid by a mortgage company through an escrow account should not make a duplicate payment, the announcement said. About one-third of Chatham County property tax payments are made this way. A copy of the tax bill is still mailed to the property owner for their records, even when the mortgage company is responsible for payment.
The Tax Commissioner’s Office is expanding service options, including a Mobile Tax Office that brings tax and motor vehicle services into communities throughout Chatham County.
Property owners are encouraged to visit tax.chathamcountyga.gov for online services, payment information, office locations, appointment scheduling and current wait times.
