Families in Savannah are invited to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with a free day of cultural activities and performances at the Davenport House Museum.
The event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, is hosted in partnership with the Savannah Chinese Association, according to a community announcement.
One of the most important holidays in many East Asian and Southeast Asian cultures, the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrates the harvest, family reunions and the full moon. The event will feature hands-on crafts, refreshments and the opening of a new photography exhibition, "Charming Savannah Seen Through Chinese Eyes,” at 12:30 p.m.
A celebration of heritage and history
The festival also highlights a unique chapter in the museum’s history. From 1901 to 1902, a portion of
the Davenport House was occupied by the Chan family, one of Savannah’s earliest Chinese-American families. Guests can explore the return of the museum’s exhibition, "Old Chan Magic: Chinese Roots, Southern Branches," which shares the story of the Chan family and Savannah’s early Chinese community.
“We are deeply honored to partner with the Savannah Chinese Association to host a very special Mid-Autumn Festival Family Day at the Davenport House Museum,” Executive Director Danielle Hodes said. “We warmly invite local residents and visitors to join us for an afternoon of history, culture and community as we celebrate Savannah’s rich heritage.”
Free and open to the public
The event is free and open to the public thanks to support from the City of Savannah. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities designed for all ages, including cultural performances and traditional refreshments.
About the Davenport House Museum
The Davenport House Museum is a historic 1820 Federal-style home that played a key role in Savannah’s preservation movement. Operated by the Historic Savannah Foundation, the museum shares the stories of master carpenter Isaiah Davenport, his family and the enslaved residents who lived in the home. The museum features period artifacts from 1820 to 1827 and includes the award-winning Urban Enslaved Exhibit, which opened in November 2023.
The Davenport House is located in Savannah’s Columbia Square and welcomes more than 40,000 visitors annually. It is owned and operated by the Historic Savannah Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the buildings, places and stories that define Savannah’s heritage.
