Former FBI Art Crime Team director to speak Oct. 1

The free public lecture will examine the theft and desecration of Indigenous cultural heritage and the meaning of justice in cultural heritage crimes. Carpenter will discuss federal laws including the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act, along with their roles in protecting cultural heritage and facilitating repatriation.
The program also will consider limitations of legal remedies in addressing cultural, spiritual and ethical harms. A reception and book signing with Carpenter will follow in the museum's sculpture court.
Ballet Lubbock event set for Oct. 7
Museum by Night: An Evening with Ballet Lubbock will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 7.
The 21-and-older event is free, but space is limited. Guests are asked to email Caroline Reeves to RSVP.
Ballet Lubbock dancers will present excerpts from founder Suzanne Aker's "Carnival of the Animals" during a working rehearsal. Attendees also can participate in a question-and-answer session with company directors and dancers.

Refreshments and an open bar will be available afterward. A valid ID is required for the open bar. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, with socks or ballet slippers recommended for the movement portion of the event.
El Día de los Muertos celebration planned Oct. 19
The museum's annual El Día de los Muertos celebration will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 19. The event is free, family-friendly and open to the public.
Activities will include hands-on crafts and Lotería, a traditional Mexican game. Live performances are planned by the Texas Tech and Coronado High School mariachi ensembles and Lubbock High School Folklórico dancers.
Refreshments will include pan de polvo, or Mexican shortbread cookies, and a nacho bar with queso. The planetarium will offer free shows every 30 minutes beginning at 2 p.m.
