It was a highlight weekend for Texas Tech football linebackers new and old.
On Saturday, it was Austin Romaine's pick-6son consecutive plays from scrimmages that vaulted the Red Raiders to a 49-14 win over Sam Houston in Galaxy Stadium. About 24 hours later, it was Jacob Rodriguez, the guy Romaine replaced in the Texas Tech lineup, who had a career moment.
During Sunday's game at Hard Rock Stadium, Rodriguez, a rookie with the Miami Dolphins, came up with the first interception of his NFL career. He just so happened to do it against another former Red Raider, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Head coach Joey McGuire said Monday he's been proud to see Texas Tech's crop of rookies performing at a high level and noted he got a text about
Rodriguez's interception from the man who threw it.
"It was incredible," McGuire said of seeing Rodriguez's interception. He continued saying Mahomes' text said that if he was going to throw a pick, at least it was against one of his own.
McGuire was also happy to see so many former Red Raiders getting to embrace each other after games. Rodriguez has already squared off with former teammate Caleb Rogers with the Las Vegas Raiders and is currently teammates with Caleb Douglas.
"Jacob's dad sent me a really cool picture of Jacob and Caleb and Caleb Rogers whenever they played the Raiders," McGuire said. "And you know, I've gotten some really cool pictures of different people being at games."
