Police have identified the 20-year-old man who was shot and killed by an officer responding to a Monday morning shots-fired called and chase in east Lubbock.
James Mayer died at University Medical Center after he was brought there by ambulance from the 1800 block of Parkway Drive, according to a Lubbock police news release.
Mayer was the subject of a 9:43 a.m. shots fired call near Canyon Lakes in the 2100 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
Callers told 911 dispatchers that a man driving around the lake was firing into bushes, the release states.
Lubbock Police Department Chief Seth Herman said during a news conference at the scene of the officer-involved shooting that no injuries were reported in that earlier shooting.
Responding officers
encountered near the intersection of MLK Boulevard and 19th Street a vehicle that matched the description of the subject, Herman said.
The driver briefly stopped for the officers but continued his flight as he fired a round out of the window of his vehicle, Herman said. No injuries were reported in that shooting as well.
Officers gave chase and tried disabling the vehicle near the intersection of MLK and East Broadway. However, the officers were unable to stop the fleeing vehicle, which continued its northbound flight.
The chase ended in a parking lot in the 1800 block of Parkway Drive where officers caught up to the fleeing vehicle behind a building on the southwest side. Officers disabled the fleeing vehicle, causing it to crash into another vehicle, the release states.
However, the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Mayer, stepped out of the car still armed with the firearm, which he pointed at an officer, who fired at him, the release states.
Herman said officers at the scene immediately gave first aid to Mayer until EMS arrived.
The officer was placed on paid administrative leave per department policy. Meanwhile the shooting is being investigated by the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit and a LPD shooting review board.
