Cooler, almost fall-like-temperatures and increased rain chances are in the forecast for Lubbock and the South Plains as soon as this weekend.
After another week of highs in the 90s and low 100s, a front is expected to drop daytime highs to the upper 80s to lower 90s by Saturday and into the 80s on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Lubbock.
"A gradual cooling temperature is expected from mid-week into the weekend, with temperatures returning to near seasonable values by Sunday," reads an outlook from NWS Lubbock. "After a few dry days, storm chances return Friday through Sunday."
The average high in Lubbock for mid-September is 85 degrees, according to the weather service.
When will rain chances increase in Lubbock?
There's a 10 to 20% chance of rain around Lubbock on Friday,
increasing to 20-50% on Saturday and 50-60% on Sunday.
"Thunderstorms are possible on the Caprock on Friday, then the thunderstorm chances expand to the entire area over the weekend," reads a hazardous weather outlook from NWS Lubbock.
Any rain could help provide relief from increasing drought conditions. Lubbock's year-to-date precipitation total is 8.82 inches - more than 5 inches behind the year-to-date average of 13.99 as of Sept. 15.
