Twenty-four FFA students representing four Lubbock-area chapters will advance to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, from Oct. 21 to Oct. 24, with financial support from AgTexas Farm Credit Services.
AgTexas Farm Credit's Lubbock branch awarded $2,000 each to Shallowater FFA, Lubbock-Cooper FFA, Lubbock ISD FFA, and Lubbock-Cooper Liberty FFA to help offset travel expenses for students attending and competing at the national level.
Shallowater FFA will send 10 students to compete in Agricultural Communications, a Career Development Event emphasizing journalism, public relations, digital media, and communication about agriculture.
Lubbock-Cooper FFA will send seven students to the Agriscience Fair in Food Products and Processing
Systems and Power, Structural and Technical Systems.
Lubbock ISD FFA will send two students to the Agriscience Fair in Animal Systems, a category covering research on animal health, nutrition, genetics, and management.
Lubbock-Cooper Liberty FFA will send five students to the Agriscience Fair in Plant Systems and Power, Structural and Technical Systems.
The National FFA Agriscience Fair recognizes students who use scientific research to explore challenges and opportunities within agriculture. Students conduct research, analyze their findings, and present their projects for evaluation.
FFA gives students opportunities to build leadership skills, explore careers in agriculture, develop confidence, serve their communities, and gain hands-on experience through a variety of agricultural activities and competitions.
“We are honored to support these students who are the future of agriculture”, says Kayla Robinson, CEO of AgTexas Farm Credit, who was an FFA member during her teen years.
AgTexas has honored outstanding FFA and 4-H students in the 43 counties it serves for the past 11 years through its AgYouth of the Month Program, which has now funded over $280,000 for graduating high school students and graduate students.
Students may apply for the $1,000 scholarships online at https://agtexas.com/what-we-do/ag-youth/. Applications close at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.
According to Robinson, “Providing recognition and scholarships for outstanding students interested in agriculture is one of the most effective ways to encourage our best and brightest youths to join our mission of helping feed and clothe the world.”
